When a heatwave hits Surrey, electrical safety is not the first thing most people think about. But hot weather places extra strain on home electrical systems, and every summer brings a predictable rise in electrical faults and fires. Here is what causes the increased risk, the warning signs to watch for, and the simple steps that keep your home safe through the warmer months.
Why hot weather increases electrical risk
Electrical components are designed to operate within a temperature range. When ambient temperatures climb, cables, sockets and consumer units run hotter than usual, and the margin before overheating narrows. Add the seasonal surge in demand - fans, portable air conditioning units, hot tubs, garden equipment and more time spent outdoors using powered tools - and the load on a domestic installation rises sharply at exactly the time it is least able to dissipate heat.
The most common summer electrical hazards
Overloaded sockets and extension leads
Coiled extension leads are one of the most common causes of summer electrical fires. A coiled lead under load generates heat that cannot escape, and the cable can melt or ignite. Always fully uncoil extension leads before use, never daisy-chain multiple leads together, and check the rating of the lead against the appliances plugged into it. Portable air conditioning units and hot tubs in particular draw heavy current and should be on a dedicated, appropriately rated supply wherever possible.
Garden and outdoor electrics
Summer is when garden electrics get used hardest - lighting, water features, hot tubs, pond pumps and outdoor sockets. Any outdoor electrical installation should be protected by an RCD, use weatherproof IP-rated fittings, and be installed by a qualified electrician. Running an indoor extension lead out to the garden through a window is a frequent and dangerous shortcut.
EV charging in hot weather
Electric vehicle charging places a sustained heavy load on a home's electrical supply. In hot weather, charging during the cooler parts of the day and ensuring the charge point and supply were professionally installed reduces risk. Never charge an EV through a domestic extension lead.
Lithium-ion battery equipment
E-bikes, e-scooters and large power-tool battery packs have been linked to a rising number of serious fires, prompting updated national safety guidance. Charge these devices on a hard surface away from exit routes, never leave them charging unattended or overnight, and stop using any battery that is swollen, damaged or charging unusually hot.
