Consumer Unit Upgrade - Block of Flats, Reigate
MS Electrical Solutions recently completed a consumer unit upgrade at a residential block of flats in Reigate for a local landlord managing a multi-occupancy property in the RH2 area.
The job
The existing consumer units across the block were outdated plastic units without adequate RCD protection - a common finding in residential blocks built before current wiring regulations came fully into force. During a routine inspection, the installations were identified as requiring upgrade to bring them in line with current standards and the landlord's compliance obligations.
We replaced the existing units with modern metal-clad consumer units fitted with full RCD and SPD protection across all circuits. All circuits were tested individually on completion, installation certificates were issued on the same day, and the work was notified to building control as required under Part P of the Building Regulations.
Why blocks of flats require careful planning
Consumer unit work in a residential block is more involved than a standard domestic installation. Tenant access, shared electrical supplies and the compliance requirements specific to multi-occupancy buildings all need to be factored in from the outset. We planned the work around the tenants, kept disruption to a minimum and completed the installation efficiently across all units in the block.
