What are the signs that my fuse box / consumer unit needs upgrading?

Common signs include:

  • Frequent tripping or overloaded circuits

  • A fuse box with rewireable fuses

  • Limited capacity for new electrical equipment

  • Buzzing or burning smells

  • Lack of RCD protection (modern safety requirement)

Upgrading your consumer unit improves safety, efficiency and compliance, especially for commercial buildings with high electrical demand.

An old unit, especially one over 20 years old, may also not meet current safety standards, and a unit may need upgrading if your home's electrical demand has increased due to renovations or more appliances.

If in any doubt, please contact us and we’d be happy to assist further, alternatively the UK Power Network contains a handy guide.
